   Hi basically that is called the envelope process. You use cash for everything and you take out your weekly check and divide weekly what you need to put away for your bills,food .. so if you cable bill is 80 a month you make an envelope for your cable, and put 20 a week away in that envelope until you have 80 to pay ur bill. If you have a cell phone and its 60 a month, make another coupon for that, and put 60 divided by four you would put 16.00 a week into that envelope. get the idea ? Its for everything, so you could have alot of envelopes or use that lady used with the tabs, I actually like that idea better than the envelopes. its basically having more control over where your money goes. when you use a debit card for everything you really have no idea where your money is going and how fast it is going. I too use debit and it was not working for me. so if you bring home 450.00 a week, you take it all out unless what you want to save and go through your monthly bills and start dividing them up.    To share just ONE of my MANY money saving techniques….

   I put 1 dollar away each day… it has nothing to do with bills but rather at the end of each year I have $365 to either spend on myself of help someone in need. I never miss a dollar and they all add up.

   Right now I have saved numerous years worth for I will be buying my parents a scooter for their anniversary soon and it will be like not spending a dime, for I have put these dollars away with out any pinching from my own budget.

   aaaaaaaaaaagh life is good when you can put money away and NOT TOUCH IT !! (one of the main problems with people today)

   i use a simple 6 month projected budget plan

   i list all of my fix monthly costs –i.e. me (explain me later) insurance taxes utilities car payments etc

   on the insureance and taxes i figure out how much i would pay in a year and put 1/12 in the monthly budget.

   than i think of any big ticket item i would like to buy in some out month — say chain saw 5 months out under that month i
   put the total cost of the chain saw.

   i also have a mgt reserve

   than i take my total monthly income and spread it out over the different costs. hopefully i have something left over and i put in my manage reserve.

   i use my credit card like a debit card since i get a rebate –so my me col has the most money in it.

   not to make it work you have to have a carry over space at the top or bottom. here everytime you use you credit card you keep and running total and deduct it from you me col. at the start of the new month you put the items you are carrying over insurance taxes vacation car payment in that area. by the way you never carry over a credit card balance.

   so at the start of the second month your check book balance plus the money you will receive that month total your carry over plus this month monthly outlay.

   Note: i forgot to say i use an interest paying checking account so the money you are accuring to pay your taxes and insurance is drawing interest.

   believe me this really sounds like a lot of work but i find that it really lets you plan a head and i always seem to have money to spend and when things come do i have the money there to pay for it.

   of course i was one of those few folks that 35 years ago when i paid my last car payment i kept making payments to myself and since that time i have not had a car payment.

   Ok the way my husband and my self do it is simple. We have a total of two different banks we use. At each bank we have 1 checking and 1 savings. One checking account is strictly bills. The other checking account is for groceries, gas, and play money- what ever is left over we divide into the two savings accounts.

   1. First I make a list of all our monthly bills–rent electric, gas, car pay, etc. say 1000. Since my husband gets paid twice a month. We divide this number by 2 and get 500.

   2. Now each time he gets paid we put 500 into our “Bills ” checking account. That way by the end of the month we have all our bill money–and dont have to stretch for a few weeks like we did before.

   3. The rest like I said goes into our other account that we use for gas, groceries, fun or whatever.

   4. That way we know each paycheck that 500 is for bills and we get it out of the account that we are spending out of.

   5. This works out nicely because we know we will never be broke one week because of paying bigger payments like the rent. And that we will have plently of money till next payday.

   6. Also, at the end of the 2 weeks right before my husband gets paid again. We take whatever is remaining from the play account and divide it into our savings accounts.

   7. This helps us stay on track since Im in school right now–even though some weeks its only 20 bucks into savings its a nice tool using separate accounts because I have found since we pay more attention to our money because of the two accounts and actually spend less on useless junk.

   Use a spending plan instead of a budget. Its like an excel sheet that allows you to monitor and weather the normal ebb and flow of everyday life. It works and used with my debt reduction plan, I was out of $10000 of debt in a year, and now have a savings account.
